American Prohibition Essay Example for Free
American Prohibition Essay : Also known as the Volstead Act, named after Republican Senator Andrew J. Volstead, the National Prohibition Act was designed to improve the morality of the nation. However, prohibition, the ââ¬Å"Noble Experiment,â⬠failed miserably in this respect. Focus/Argument: Prohibition in fact failed to bolster morals as hoped, but instead led to an increase in violent crime and caused morals to slip due to reactionary protest from the people. Paper should focus on the major cities of the twenties such as Chicago, New York, and St. Louis. Special attention should be focused on the mafia, gangland violence, and bootlegging, as well as the spread of speakeasies and the resulting Jazz culture (flappers, corruption, etc). Introduction: ââ¬Å"The so-called Temperance movement, which in fact opposed temperate and responsible enjoyment of alcohol beverages, proposed that to defeat the disease of alcohol dependency among the few allegedly required abstinence from the many. â⬠1 This was the rationale which enabled the 18th amendment to the U. S. Constitution to be passed. Also known as the Volstead Act, named after its author the Republican senator Andrew J. Volstead, the National Prohibition Act was designed to improve the morality of the nation. However, prohibition, the ââ¬Å"Noble Experiment,â⬠failed miserably in this respect. 2 In fact, it caused an increase in crime and gave impetus to violence on a scale not seen since the days of the old west. Morality also became increasingly lax as speakeasies, Jazz, sexual promiscuity, and flappers mushroomed across the nation, giving full meaning to the term, ââ¬Å"The Roaring Twenties. â⬠Coupled with post-war prosperity with people having more money and time off than ever before, they looked for things to spend their earnings on as well as for ways to blow off steam. 3 The rise of popular legend stemming from the Prohibition years in the form of movies, books, and people such as mobster Al Capone and Treasury agent Elliott Ness, have had a lasting impact on popular culture through modern times. The Prohibition decade was more than a prohibition on alcohol consumption; it was a prohibition on morals which never has been repealed. American Prohibition: Moral Decay and Corruption in the Roaring Twenties The 1920s went by various monikers such as the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties. It was a time of prosperity for most Americans. Scientific and technological improvements increased industrial production. The automobile, electric appliances, chemical and construction industries expanded tremendously during the 1920s. People were generally able to afford luxuries. The 1920s was also an era of wild gaiety for part of the population. Novels of the period stressed the rebellion of the youth against the traditional values of their parents. These groups from the urban areas came to seem typical of the 1920s though actually many more people were leading conservative lives. Women had been given the right to vote in 1920 when the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. For the first time, women wore their dresses short and bobbed their hair; many wore make-up and smoked cigaretteââ¬â¢s. They became regulars in the dance scenes in clubs and cabarets where jazz was played. They were called flappers. Some imitated the movie stars they saw in silent files like the glamorous Gloria Swanson and Norma Talmadge and swooned over Rudolf Valentino. Talking pictures were first introduced in 1927 featuring the Jazz Singer. Jazz music was played everywhere and was most popular in the urban area of New York as it seemed to embody the vitality of the city. Speakeasies sprouted everywhere. Its name bespoke secrecy as these private clubs admonish its customers to speak easy or softly or the police might herar. Charles A. Lindbergh was a completely different type of national hero. In May 27, this young man from the Midwest became the first person to fly alone, nonstop, across the Atlantic Ocean. 4 Prohibition was partly responsible for the daring, reckless spirit of the twenties. An amendment to the Constitution was submitted to the states on December 18, 1917 and on January 29, 1919, the Eighteenth Amendment was declared ratified, to wit: Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article, the manufacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited. 5 On January 16, 1920, the National Prohibition Act or, otherwise known as the Volstead Act, went into effect. The conservatives had long been calling for temperance arguing that alcohol is the source of all ills. Science was used to give evidence that alcohol was linked to vices, diseases, suicide and leads to early death. The employers encouraged total abstinence so as to minimize industrial accidents and at the same time increase productivity. The religious community associated alcohol with evil. The womenââ¬â¢s group proclaimed it detrimental to family relations. 6 With the entry of the United States in World War I, they quickly gained supporters due to the growing resentment against anything German which included beer. Moreover, patriotism called for self-sacrifice and anyone who did not remain sober and defend the country were met with hostility. During the war, the manufacture of beer and liquor had been prohibited to conserve grain and by July 1919, the sale of liquor had been stopped. With such public sentiment, the prohibitionists gained ground and the amendment was passed. 7 The day before the Volstead Act was to take effect, the Anti-Saloon League of New York made an optimistic prediction by stating that, ââ¬Å"Tonight, John Barleycorn makes his last will and testament. Now for an era of clean thinking and clean living! â⬠8 Instead, the opposite took place. Almost immediately, violations across the country were being reported. Police were carrying out raids of establishments who persisted in selling liquor. The law was observed mostly in the Midwest where the ââ¬Å"dryâ⬠movement had begun, but in the large eastern cities the laws were flagrantly broken. As well, there were not enough Federal and state agents to enforce prohibition. In fact, now that is was illegal, more people began to drink more than ever. Such circumstances made Al Capone self-righteous enough to proclaim that: I make my money by supplying a public need. If I break the law, my customers, who number hundreds of the best people in Chicago, are as guilty as I am. The only difference between us is that I sell and they buy. 9 Fortunes were made in bootlegging or the manufacture and sale of liquor illegally. Criminals organized ââ¬Å"mobsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"syndicatesâ⬠to operate in certain areas. Al Capone was one of these of bosses. He held sway in Chicago and Cicero, Illinois, with an estimated 750 paid gunmen. Crime became big business in other large cities, too. There were many kidnappings for ransom. Among them was Charles Lindberghââ¬â¢s son who in 1932, was not only kidnapped but was also murdered. When prohibition ended in February 16, 1933 with the passing of the Twenty-first Amendment to repeal the Eighteenth Amendment, the mobs turned to protection rackets, slot machines and other gambling and the distribution of narcotics. 10 To be fair, the prohibition did manifest benefits though only for a short period. This could probably be because liquor was still relatively hard to find and when one did find it, the price of violation was high. This does not refer to the penalties to be imposed when caught but that the cost of liquor had become so prohibitive that the average American earner could not afford a glass of cocktail. The prohibition had no effect on the rich, however, as they continued to drink well while the poor drank badly. This led to further divisiveness as it was becoming classifies as a class legislation. 11 In 1920, the year the law came into effect, there was a significant drop in the arrests for drunkenness which was even lower than 1918 and 1919 when Americans were voluntary abstaining from liquor due to wartime restrictions and patriotism. By 1921, however, arrests for drunkenness had once again risen with no indications of declining. This data can be seen in a 1926 survey of 384 municipalities that was prepared by Stanley Shirk, the research director of The Moderation League, Inc. The results as it was presented to the Senate Committee Hearing were as follows: 12 Year Number of Arrests for Intoxication in 384 Communities Year Number of Arrests for Intoxication in 384 Communities 1914 523,049 1920 233,837 1915 528,347 1921 317,492 1916 557,634 1922 425,353 1917 542,039 1923 499,322 1918 423,048 1924 515,199 1919 309,760 1925 533,483 The World League against Alcoholism likewise presented its own survey results in the same Senate Committee Hearing which compiled the records of 514 cities and towns. 13 Year Arrests for Drunkenness per 10,000 Population Year Arrests for Drunkenness per 10,000 Population 1914 169 1920 60 1915 165 1921 84 1916 176 1922 111 1917 169 1923 126 1918 124 1924 127 1919 97 These figures also showed an increase in arrests after 1920, the bone-dry year, but it was contended that this was more due to increased police activity. The anti-Alcoholism League, at that time, can merely give a forecast that arrests will go down in 1925 and beyond. They pointed out that compared with the figures from 1914 to 1917 of the pre-prohibition years, recorded arrests after 1920 were still much lower. Regardless, whether we look at it from the ââ¬Å"wetâ⬠or ââ¬Å"dryâ⬠statistics, the data showed that the number of arrests for drunkenness was not receding. This gave evidence that for the primary objective of the National Prohibition Act was not met and could not be met. The numbers from 1918 to 1921 are also quite notable as it implied a change in the attitudes of the general population towards alcohol. By the time prohibition was put in effect, the wartime fervor seems to have already waned, abstinence had overstayed its welcome, drinking was no longer met with social disapproval and people were clamoring for a drink notwithstanding the law. Institutions and agencies were likewise fairly tolerant of transgressions of the law and would accept any loophole around it. In courtrooms of Wyoming and San Francisco, judges and jury gave much leeway to the defense to the point of allowing the evidence to be drunk which led to the technicality of lack of evidence against the bootlegger defendant and the cases were thrown out. Doctors could and did prescribe up to three pints of vitamin-enhanced whiskey which was in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling. Government beer was prescribed by the gallons for medicinal purposes. 14 As a result, it had soon become a law that nobody wanted to obey thus making it harder to enforce. Thereupon, a general perception followed that crime was prevalent. Foremost among these are convictions for crime which did not used to be treated as criminal before the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment. This perception of lawlessness was compounded by the sensational publicity given to prohibition violations which had become daily news stories in the papers. In an age where cinema was most influential, many movies were produced that depicted a lot of drinking not by the villains but by the heroes and heroines. 15 Prominent people have likewise testified before the Senate to express their opinion against the Volstead Act and argue for revision. They aimed to prove that lawlessness had in fact increase since it was passed. One of these opponents of prohibition was Michigan politician Charles S. Wood who contended that the statistics for the arrests on drunkenness would actually have been much greater except that people were doing their drinking inside homes and hotels rather than in saloons hence there is little chance for them to be caught drunk in the streets. 16 This can be corroborated by the increasing number of deaths recorded for cirrhosis of the liver. Alcoholic admissions in one New York hospital as recorded in the 1930s were over 1000 a year. Apparently, they became alcoholics during prohibition. 17

Foxwoods: Pleasure in the Absence of Sin? Essay -- Descriptive Essay, D
Fifty two miles from Providence, on Route 2 off Interstate 95 you will find a purple and turquoise glow in the middle of the Connecticut woods. On the Mashantucket Pequot reservation, the largest gambling casino in the world ââ¬âFoxwoods, sits nestled among massive, old growth trees and modest hills. Route 2 cuts a straight shot through the woods. An endless row of headlights returning from the casino illuminates both sides of the rural, two-lane road, and a string of brake lights guide the way towards a land run by rules of luck, addiction, and money. A tour bus returning to New York lights up a hand-laid, New England stone wall. In its disrepair, the wall no longer marks the boundaries of a proud property, tilled and worked with Protestant resolve. The decrepit mass of stones stands as a sadly antiqued relic on either side of a yellow brick road towards a fantasy world of elusive profits and dreams backed only by chance. The pastoral vision of a Puritan New England, with stone walls and white clapboard houses, frames an approach to the self-contained complex of mammoth buildings. They rise above the tree line and cast an umbrella of neon over an otherwise undeveloped and rural part of Connecticut. Residents of the three closest towns have complained that they can no longer see the stars due to the lights cast off from Foxwoodââ¬â¢s enormous towers. Last year, tour buses coming from New York, Hartford, Providence, and other points discharged 1.1 million gamers. The buses shuttle constantly along this paved artery between Foxwoods and Interstate 95, so you are never alone, and there is never darkness. I asked a Yale student, 21-year-old Cory Anthony Lee whether he sees himself as a winner. "A winner. There really are no wi... ...as they fall into cupped palms, quarters sloshing like soup in super sized plastic cups. Itââ¬â¢s a circular sound that induces you to keep going. Cresting, high-pitched waves of noise always ends on the up, and vibrate through your body to make mush of the brain. You are filled with a sense of propulsion, repetition, a feeling of the inevitable. Itââ¬â¢s maddening, deafening, like that ringing in the ear when youââ¬â¢re sick or have damaged your eardrum ââ¬âboth a persistent ring and buzz, but one which isolates you from any realm of normalcy. The noise distracts you from the impulse to stop at your limit. Cresting waves of winning, surrounded by the circular rhythms of machines on the edge of paying big, fill you with a sense of anticipation. Foxwoods studiously prods, cajoles, and seduces you into believing that you are always on the cusp of making it all back or winning more.

Adolescent Moral Development
Morality can be defined as the distinction between what is right and wrong or what is good and bad. Although, moral reasoning depends on culture which makes it difficult to define. Most people donââ¬â¢t look at where these principles are coming from or what guides one through moral development. As children grow and learn, usually from care takers and people who inspire their every need, their morality changes based on several levels. Although researching of moral development goes as far back as Socrates, there are two psychologists that studied morality in depth and they are Lawrence Kohlberg and Jean Piaget.Jean Piaget was a cognitive developmental psychologists spending most of his time working with children and adolescents, including his own. Although, Piagetââ¬â¢s observation of moral development wasnââ¬â¢t in depth like Kohlberg, he allowed for a basic understanding. He believed that moral development occurred in stages. Piaget strongly believed in education and thought interaction in a education setting allowed children maximum potential in cognitive development. Piaget believed in many things, but when it came to moral development there were only two basic principles. The first principle was that children develop moral ideas in stages and could not skip stages, although movement from one stage to the other could vary in length. Lastly he believed that children create their own perception of their world, including whether their actions enforce what is morally right or wrong. ââ¬Å"Piaget's ideas of moral realism and morality of cooperation play a role in Kohlberg's theory. Children in Piaget's stage of moral realism believe that rules are absolute and can't be changed.Punishment should be determined by how much damage is done, and the intention of the child is not taken into account. For example, a child operating in the stage of moral realism would believe that a child who accidentally breaks three cups should be punished more than a child who b reaks one cup on purpose. Eventually, both the damage done and the intention of the offender in a given moral dilemma are considered in this stage of moral development. â⬠Lawrence Kohlberg studied moral development in depth and that is what he is most commonly known for.Although his basic ideas and principles originated from the ideas of Piaget, Kohlberg did an in depth study of the basics of morality and how a child or adolescents move from one stage to the next. Kolberg had developed six stages of moral development. All of the stages were grouped into three levels of sub categories. Stages one and two are pre-conventional judgment and moral development. Stages three and four are conventional judgment. Lastly, stages are five and six are post conventional. When children are born Kolberg believes that they have no morals and as they grow and learn, morals begin to form. The pre-conventional level is where morality begins. This is the basis of moral judgment. The moral values he re in this stage are external. Stage one is based on obedience and punishment. If a child is punished they will try and avoid the situation knowing that they will be punished so that act is known as wrong to the children. Stage two is a slightly more complex stage. Children are now egocentric and are able to exchange thoughts and ideas. Both male and females hold certain roles and have different beliefs. The conventional level ââ¬Å"Those who reason in a conventional way judge the morality of actions by comparing them to society's views and expectations. Conventional morality is characterized by an acceptance of society's conventions concerning right and wrong. At this level an individual obeys rules and follows society's norms even when there are no consequences for obedience or disobedience. Adherence to rules and conventions is somewhat rigid, however, and a rule's appropriateness or fairness is seldom questioned ââ¬Å".Stage three is where children are labeled. In this stage ch ildren are labeled either good or bad. Children try and please others for acceptance and approval. For example, during the Christmas holiday season children try their hardest to be good so Santa will come and bring them Christmas presents. Where as if they are bad they will receive coal. Stage four is where authority comes in and plays a highly important role. Children learn that authority figures are the ones who control and maintain order. Also they try and live up to others expectations instead of their own.The post conventional level is where moral values allow adolescents and adults to distinguish the difference between societies view of right and wrong and the views of their individual views. Most people live by these views of right and wrong. In stage five the world is known as being able to hold their own opinions and views. Stage six is using your own opinions and applying them. For instance choosing to use logic and consistency or the feeling of your own ethics to make und erstandable and logical decisions. While a child grows the formation of morality is highly important.Alcoholics, drug addicts and murderers might suffer from disturbed moral thoughts which might cause an error in their beliefs of right and wrong. For instance, a murderer who grew up in an abusive home atmosphere might think it is okay to be abusive and hurt other people. So therefore there morality was culture based and was encouraged based on the home life sustained. The same for alcoholics and drug addicts. Although, not all people who come from these types of dysfunctional families suffer and act upon there cultural up bringing some may.

Chapter Outline Apush Ch.15 - 1056 Words
Chapter 15: Crucible of Freedom: Civil War, 1861-1865 Both North and South were ill prepared for war in 1861. Initially dependent on volunteers, the Confederacy established a draft in 1862, and the Union did so the following year. At first the South relied on imported arms and munitions but soon was able to produce its own. It had more trouble with clothing and food throughout the duration of the war. Financing the war was also a problem. Americans had been unaccustomed to paying taxes to the national government, but both sides had to end the tradition of hard money and minimal government by raising taxes, issuing war bonds, and printing paper money. Inflation was serious in the North and devastating in the South by 1865. Theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the Sea Islands, black refugees took advantage of temporary reallocation of former plantation lands to form their own communities. By 1863 both sides were experiencing labor shortages, inflation, and dissension. With its superior resources, the Union met the challenge more effectively. Although the cotton-textile industry in the North was hurt, industries directly related to the war effort--arms manufacture, ready-made clothing, and railroads--flourished. The Republicans in Congress were able to act on their idea of free soil, free labor, free men and passed the Homestead Act and the Morrill Land Grant Act. Nevertheless, workers suffered during the war as wages lagged 20 percent or more behind price increases. The Southern economy was totally shattered by the war, as railroads were torn up, food-growing regions were occupied by Union troops, and planters continued to try to raise cotton crops. Southern women were forced to revive home production of goods in short supply, but even that was hard to do as Union invasions turned women and children into refugees. As the war went on, dissent became a problem on both sides. In the North Peace Democrats, known as Copperheads, contributed to the volatile brew of political, ethnic, racial, and class antagonism that erupted into antidraft protests in several cities. Nevertheless, freedom of

Relation Inflation And Inflation Uncertainty -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Relation Inflation And Inflation Uncertainty? Answer: Introduction This report is about the BigS, a manufacturer of stereos in New Zealand. Most of its main parts that are used for assembling a stereo are imported from Canada. Recently the rate of Zealand dollar is depreciated against the dollar rate of Canada. This depreciation has increased the production cost for the company. In the phase of globalization, BigS is facing a tough competition from foreign companies that are into the same field and running their business in New Zealand. All these circumstances have increased the problems for the BigS organization many times. The revenues of organizations have fallen down to an extent of 15%. Further, the return on investment of the organization has seen an enormous low of 6%. In this report, we will discuss the two other organizations namely Birdies and Placard that whether the BigS organization should invest in Birdies or Placard and what long-term benefits BigS will receive in future after investing in one of these organizations. Birdies are opera ting its business in country A and are enjoying a situation of monopoly in its business they are into the same business of producing or manufacturing stereos, whereas Placard is operating its business in Europe and has yielded an average return on investment of 17% in the last 3years. The Placard is into the business of manufacturing gaming headsets. Diversification Analysis Diversification is a tool or a strategy that is used by big or medium scale business organizations to expand or to bring new technology into the existing business. In this report, we are going to make a diversification analysis of the opportunities and the risk that will come along with this diversification if organization BigS choose to invest in Birdies or Placard. Now if we talk about Birdies then it is very clear that the organization would yield a maximum return on investment of around 9% and that too in 5 years, and this organization is enjoying a monopoly position in its country that means they have no close competition in their line of business and if BigS decides to invest in Birdies then it will directly double the benefits of the BigS organization. Any business organization in this world desires to grow more and more, and diversification is one out of the four strategies to expand the business of a business organization. Below is the table that shows the four strategies of expanding business(Meja 2011) Market Penetration Product Development Market Development Diversification While three of the mentioned strategies are somewhat related to each other, then there is diversification that means entering a business organization into a different market or acquiring a business organization(Bookbinder 2016). Now coming back to the situation, BigS that used to earn a good amount of revenues is now suffering because of the change in the dollars rates of New Zealand and Canada, and because of the international competitors. Now, BigS have two options whether to invest 40% in Birdies or to invest the same amount in Placard. Now we will discuss the opportunities or the risk that would come along with the investment in Birdies(Bogle 2015). Birdies Birdies is also a producer of stereos in country A. Birdies is not operating its business on a large scale like BigS but they are enjoying a monopoly position in this marketing in their country. Country A is imposing high-interest rates in order to curb inflation. If in case BigS go with option A, then it will not really increase benefits of the BigS, as the interest rates are higher, income is low in country A, the expected return on investment that BigS will get is around 7%. There are no chances of any change in the monetary policy in the near future that means BigS have to face the interest rate of 10%. The risks that will come along with this diversification are as under(Kenny 2014): Low income and high rate of interest will worsen the situation at the BigS, as it is already suffering from the increase in operational costs and 15% decrease in the revenues. Birdies are operating their business in a country where income is low which ultimately means they are using poor technology, hence another risk is shifting from high to low technology will again put them into worse condition(Elseiver 2018). Another risk that would entail with this investment is that the foreign competitors will take the show away while BigS will be busy setting up in Country A. Placard Now talking about Placard, it is a business organization that manufactures gaming headsets and is using technology that would prove out to be very new for BigS. Placard and BigS are somehow into a related business. Now if BigS decides to invest in Placard which only conducts its business in Europe then it will prove out to be very profitable for BigS as the interest rates that Placard is currently imposed is only 0.5%, it may be reverted to its previous state if the inflation goes beyond the level of 1%. The Placard is using high technology and if BigS decides to take over its business then BigS may experience an increase of 7% on the return on investment. Placard case is riskier than that of Birdies. However, the risks include are, as under: Placard business has high risk i.e. 13% standard deviation. Interest rates may get an increase in Europe. Competition is very extreme in their market, BigS may or may not be able to handle. Change in Inflation, Interest Rate, and Exchange Rate Investment in Birdies If BigS makes an investment in Birdies, then the change in the inflation rate, interest rate, and exchange rates would have the following effects on the investment: If there is an increase in the inflation rate in country A, where birdies are operating its business then it will directly increase the interest rate, which will result in lower revenues and higher interests for BigS. Suppose if the exchange rates fall then it will make the things cheaper in country A that means BigS will have access to cheaper resources but it also means that they will earn a low income. Investment in Placard If BigS makes an investment in Placard, then following will be the results of the changes in inflation, interest and exchange rate: If there is an increase or decrease in the inflation rate, then it will not harm the revenue of BigS in Europe is comparatively lower than that of Country A. Exchange rates would affect the BigS organization, the currency of Europe is a pound and BigS deals in dollars, so BigS will have to bring more capital if the exchange rate increases. Interest rates are as low as 0.5% in Placard country, so little change whether increases or decrease will not going to harm BigS. Two Scenarios Pessimistic and Optimistic Optimistic Birdies Birdies is a business organization operating its business in country A. Birdies is enjoying a position of monopoly in their country and have an access to cheap labor. Below are given the results according to the Optimistic view, if BigS makes an investment in Birdies: The operational cost of BigS will be reduced to a great extent as the labor cost in country A is comparatively cheaper. BigS will be enjoying double benefits as they will be able to shift resources (labor, machinery) from country A to their original country i.e. New Zealand. The income of BigS will be doubled or maybe tripled, in case of rising in the prices of oil, as the economy of a country is dependent mainly on the global prices of its commodity. Pessimistic Birdies Now if we take up a pessimistic view and then the results would be as under: Due to higher interest rates and inflation rate, revenues are going down to an unbelievable low. A decrease in the oil prices will further decrease the income level in the country, which means that BigS will have low income. Cheap labor means less productive and less trained labor that will again result in the loss of BigS. Optimistic Placard The Placard is a manufacturer of gaming headset in Europe. The competition in their field is very aggressive; however, they have a good technology. In addition to this, the interest and inflation rates are very low in the country that Placard is operating its business in. Below will the optimistic scenario: Lower interest and inflation rates will let BigS earn a good income, as lower interest and inflation rate will be an opportunity to earn more. High technology will allow BigS to produce high tech stereos on their own price. Labor in Europe will be trained and highly productive, this will further reduce the operational cost and increase the revenues of the BigS. Pessimistic Placard The Pessimistic scenario will produce the following results: The political uncertainty in Europe can bring the country on its knees, which will result in recession or inflation, which means that BigS will face loss. Fierce competition is faced by Placard, which ultimately means that the first step would be to take care of the competition. The severe risk may totally put an end on the revenue of the BigS, as Placard is not only facing the risk of competition but also the risk of increased inflation or interest rates and the risk of the political uncertainty. Financial Derivatives In this section, we are going to discuss the risks to which BigS would be exposed if they decide to expand their business with either Birdie's or with Placard. The risks that the organization BigS would be exposed to are as under: In case, BigS decides to expand its business by investing in Placard, a European gaming headset manufacturer then the first or the major risk that will come into the way of BigS is the risk of the political uncertainty. Political instability effects the investment in an adverse manner(Ababa 2014). Suppose the current governments implies 2% tax on the income of the business and a new government come into power and increase this tax by 8% then this will directly harm the revenues of the business. Now if BigS decides to make an investment in Birdies then again the risk of earning low income will come in the way of BigS. Country A where birdies are operating its business is a low-income country which means that even if BigS successfully earn money from birdies then also their revenues will remain low. The High rate of interest and inflation in country A is another risk to the revenues of the BigS. There is no point of operating a business in a country where the interest and inflation rates are high. More the inflation in a country less will be the spending power of a consumer of that country(Sylla 2015). Fierce competition in Europe is faced by Placard, now if BigS makes an investment in Placard then not only the risk of change in interest rates, exchange rates or political uncertainty but the fierce competition will affect the investment of the BigS(Pillow 2013). BigS if decide to make an investment if any of the mentioned business organization then to cover these risks mentioned above, BigS can make a contract (Financial Derivative) with either of the firm and then this contract can be used as a hedge against the risks that BigS is exposed to(Gupta 2015). The contract can contain the following conditions(Vashishtha 2010): Commodity Risk: In this type of financial derivative, the supplier and the buyer comes into a contract in present for a future date that if in case the price of a commodity or a raw material increases then the supplier will supply that commodity on the present rate and not on the increased rate. This can be used for the case of Birdies and Placard both(Vahey 2014). Interest Risk: If in a case due to political uncertainty the change in interest makes the company unable to pay the interest then this financial derivative can be used as a hedge against this risk(EduPristine 2015). Recommendations In this section, few recommendations are provided for BigS to follow for the investment purpose. BigS should invest in Placard as BigS is in more need of technological change rather than earning revenues. Once BigS gets its hands on new technology they can manufacture different stereos that will allow them to charge prices more than what they were charging till date. Moreover, BigS is and Placard are almost into the same business the only difference is one is producing the stereos while the other is producing the gaming headsets both are related to the sound. Another benefit that could be enjoyed by BigS is the lower rate of inflation and interest in the UK. Less inflation means more spending power and low-interest rates mean more income(Daniela Viorica 2014), if we consider all these points with that of Birdies then Birdies stands nowhere close to the investment proposal of Placard. There is no doubt that investment in Placard is riskier but that is also true that more the risk the better will be the outcome(Vukovic 2016). So BigS is recommended to invest in Placard rather than going for Birdies. References Ababa, DA 2014, Impact of Political Instability, 5th edn, Marletto Publishers.
